Used shipping container building is a new type of steel structure system, and now this kind of structure type has received great popularity in the field of civil buildings. Architectural discourse and construction method are displayed through modular idea, so lots of beautiful building elevations are created successfully, the period of construction can be cut obviously as well. Reusing the used shipping container in another way is consistent with the trend of energy-saving and environmental-friendly buildings. While in the process that used shipping containers are conversed from cargo transportation containers to building modules, the single shipping container’s original structural form and combination form of a large number of containers have been changed, in addition, the load that shipping containers often bear is also changed. Therefore, the security of used shipping container buildings is still hard to be insured，and there is not the related regulation or law to direct the construction of this type of buildings. For the reasons mentioned, the research of used shipping container in this paper is done from two perspectives that contain architectural conversion and structural modification. The architectural idea has been shown on the basic of two container module (20ft and 40ft), the architectural conversion is consist of the principle and practical method that can realize all kinds of habitable function; The structural modification has set the limitation to the principle of architectural conversion from the view of structure security, there are two aspects: one revolves the layout of support posts and combination of container modules that controlled by vertical load on the condition of structural stability; the area and layout of cutouts on the walls is controlled by lateral load on the condition of limitation of lateral displacement. All these have been completed, the simplified and fast design drafts that meet the requirements of complicated building structure is easy to be created. Finally, the principles mentioned above is verified by FME software Abaqus .
